Grateful to Be Here
By Diana McKoski

In June 2003, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The following six months involved three major surgeries, four rounds of chemo and whole bunches of tests.

I knew that I was going to lose my hair, so went out and purchased a wig before that happened. It is always a good thing when you are prepared.

The little problem with the wig was that it blew off pretty easily. One day I was chasing my wig and thought it could be worse. My pants could have fallen to my feet.

I have been taking an anti-cancer drug that I hope keeps the cancer out of the other breast.

When I was first diagnosed, all I needed to know was what needed to be my next step in this cancer process. I had a few days, especially when I was doing the chemo, when I had a pity party. My dad had passed away at 51 of cancer, my aunt at 45 and my grandma at 61, so I thought my future was not too bright. I was 53 when I was diagnosed and am very grateful for each year I am allowed to add to my life.

I have tried to add more natural and organic foods to my diet. I especially have decided that there is not a whole lot in life that is real important, but I try to pay attention to what is.

The doctors and nurses who work at the Cancer Treatment Center made everything so much easier. Their understanding and compassion truly showed through. The support of my family and friends then and the people that I have become acquainted with since has been great. Trying to keep things as normal as they usually are and keeping a good attitude were definitely pluses.

Thanks for letting me share my story and for the Lord to still let me be here.

UPDATE MARCH 1, 2009:

Diana was grateful for each new day after surviving breast cancer.

“I am feeling good,” McKoski said. She has been cancer-free for five and half years. She said writing her story was “one way to vent” and that people sent her notes and made her feel as though they understood what she went through. She remains exceptionally grateful.
